1. What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form which combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Capoeira is a dialog between players - a conversation through movement which can take on many shades of meaning. The details of capoeira's origins and early history are still a matter of debate among historians, but it is clear that African slaves played a crucial role in the development of the art form. Some historians claim that slaves used capoeira's dance-like appearance as a way to hide their training of combat and self-defense. Capoeira's many styles come out of the context of two principle branches that were formalized in the first half of the twentieth century following capoeira's legalization.

2. CPUT Bellville Campus – Capoeira Classes

Classes are taught by Instructor Zumbi. We cover stretching, strength building, capoeira movements (kicks, defense, motion, and acrobatics), capoeira instruments, songs, and maculele. Beginners are welcome. Capoeira is for everyone - come give it a try.

Come try out a class - beginners are always welcome! Bring clothes that you can move in - ideally white pants and a white t-shirt. Shoes are optional, although many people find it is easier to play barefoot.

3. First Day in Capoeira Class

The first class may work a lot of new muscles, so it is important to get there on time to have time to stretch and get warmed up before the workout. After the warm up the class splits into levels. Follow the movements as best you can and don't feel shy about asking questions or looking for help. As Instructor Zumbi always says "No question, no answer
