My parents were married at 19 and 20 years old. Although in those days, marrying you was rather common, the issues surrounding marrying before one is ready to do so were ultimately still the same. Not surprisingly, my parents were divorced shortly after my first birthday. Partially due to the fact that I never knew my parents together, as a couple, I never really felt that I was at a disadvantage when it came to being raised in a single-parent home. However, as I have gotten older, I have also recognized that there were undoubtedly unique challenges that I had to face throughout my life.

The need for attention.

Without a doubt, my mother did the best that she could to provide me with ample amounts of attention. As a single child, it was undoubtedly easier for her to give me adequate amounts of time. Further, the fact that we lived with my grandparents allowed me to receive attention from these two additional resources.
